How to configure Free Radius proxy ?

In this post, I am going to write about configuring a Free Radius server to proxy and load balance requests to multiple Free Radius home servers.

I am using Free Radius version 3.0.12 in Ubuntu 16.04

Let’s say you have 3 Free Radius home servers and 1 Free Radius proxy server.

For this proxy to work, no additional configuration is required in the home servers.

Edit the file in /etc/freeradius/proxy.conf in the proxy server:

home_server freeradius0 {
 type = auth
 ipaddr = 192.168.10.11
 port = 1812
 secret = SECRET
 require_message_authenticator = yes
 response_window = 20
 zombie_period = 40
 status_check = status-server
 check_interval = 30
 num_answers_to_alive = 3
 max_outstanding = 65536
}
home_server freeradius1 {
 type = auth
 ipaddr = 192.168.10.12
 port = 1812
 secret = SECRET
 require_message_authenticator = yes
 response_window = 20
 zombie_period = 40
 status_check = status-server
 check_interval = 30
 num_answers_to_alive = 3
 max_outstanding = 65536
}
home_server freeradius2 {
 type = auth
 ipaddr = 192.168.10.13
 port = 1812
 secret = SECRET
 require_message_authenticator = yes
 response_window = 20
 zombie_period = 40
 status_check = status-server
 check_interval = 30
 num_answers_to_alive = 3
 max_outstanding = 65536
}

home_server_pool freeradius_loadbalance {
 type = load-balance
 home_server = freeradius0
 home_server = freeradius1
 home_server = freeradius2
}

realm NULL {
 auth_pool = freeradius_loadbalance
 nostrip

Now, all the requests to the proxy server will be auto load balanced between multiple home servers.

    • Hi Christian. I am sorry I do not know the answer to your question. I did not use Free Radius in the last 1 year. However, if I find something, I will let you know.
